Brief Information Josephine Baker was an American-born French entertainer, activist, and French Resistance agent. She was the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture and the first American Black woman to become a French citizen. Baker's performances, particularly in Paris, made her an international star and a symbol of the Jazz Age. During World War II, she served as an intelligence officer for the French Resistance.
